You will be learning simple steps to traditional dances from around the world, and all skill levels will find something to enjoy. We’ll have punch and cookies, too! A judge selects 1st, 2nd and honorable mentions in each category along with Best In Show. Cash prizes will go to 1st places, 2nd places, Best In Show and People’s Choice awards.

The 5th annual IHMAC ARTISTS SHOW AND SELL opens Tuesday, September 10. Works range in price from $5 to $1,000, with a wide variety of mediums and subject matter. The show provides a venue for southeast Kansas and area artists exhibit to sell their work. Unique to this exhibit is the opportunity for artists to add additional art works to their displays as they sell, so be sure to check back in often. Art Center hours are Tue - Sat, 10 AM to 4 PM. Gallery admission is free.
Enjoy the adventures of Martin and Osa Johnson in this traveling exhibit from the #1 Museum in Kansas. The Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum features world class exhibits based on the stunning photography and cinematic works of the Johnsons who pioneered the ideology “take only photos, leave only footprints.” Martin Johnson grew up in Independence, KS and later met and married Osa Leighty from Chanute, KS. Gallery Admission is free.

An evening of music with talented singers, songwriters performing original works and sharing the stories that inspired the music. The Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) presents “Journey Stories,” a set of seven posters designed to encourage dialogue, engagement and participation in classrooms and communities on how movement has defined America.
This year’s Neewollah exhibit will focus on Neewollah during the 1970’s.
This exhibit, funded by a grant from Humanities Kansas, will explore what our community was like in the 1970’s.

She also paints animals and landscapes. Techniques are always emphasized. Most of Joan’s work involves mixed media—watercolor paints and ink. Fee: $30 per person, $25 for IHMAC members.

On Monday, May 1 at 7pm, Invoke will be presented by Independence Community College at Independence Historical Museum and Arts Center (123 N 8th St.). The group will perform several selections of their original music, in addition to performing Enigma for the Night by Jocelyn C. Chambers and The Lessons of History by Jonathan Bingham.
Invoke is an Austin-based, multi-instrumental quartet comprised of Nick Montopoli, violin/banjo/vocals; Zach Matteson, violin/vocals; Karl Mitze, viola/mandolin/vocals; Geoff Manyin, cello/vocals. They are an Austin-based group– which the Capital Gazette describes as “versatile and musically adventurous”
The second gradient wash workshop uses the same techniques as the first workshop to explore the different types of washes, creating a new landscape painting.
