Step into the late 1800's bedroom and the first thing that may catch your eye is the bed from the 1800's. It has a tall walnut headboard with a feather mattress. The quilt covering the bed is called a Friendship Quilt that was made by members of the Daisy Embroidery Club in West Cherry Township. Each member who made a quilt block embroidered her name on it.

Other furniture you will see include wardrobes which served as their closet. Inside these you will find several articles of clothing from the time period. The bentwood cradle is from 1903 and the pieced baby quilt was made by Katherine Barton. There is a collection of baptism dresses as well as confirmation dresses. The baptism dress on the doll laying on the bed was worn by Dr. John Paul Merritt who was born in 1891. Also displayed in the room are two wedding dresses; one was worn by Gov. Lyman Humphry's daughter and the other belonged to his granddaughter. In those days there was no inside plumbing, so for convenience you will notice the potty chair beside the bed. A recent addition in the bedroom is a wash basin and pitcher set that belonged to Violet Brechbill. It was purchased by her husband when they lived in Pennsylvania, but traveled with them when they moved to Independence to work for Sinclair Pipe Line Co. It was special for the owner because of the painted violets on the pieces.
