Call for Entries

The Independence Historical Museum and Art Center has hosted the Verdigris Valley Art Exhibit for sixty-two years to not only celebrate the art of area artists, but also promote their works. Any two-dimensional artist living within Kansas or 500 miles of Independence is welcome to exhibit. Former area residents are also invited. Artist over 18 years of age may enter. Only original art work is accepted.

The exhibit will include only two- dimensional work (painting, drawing, watercolor, and mixed media.) Cash award for Best of Show: $250. Possible awards in the above mentioned categories: First Place: $200; Second Place: $100.

Steven Greenwall captivates the audience.

The Independence Historical Museum and Art Center is proud to announce that Mark Grosserode, of Tulsa, won Best of Show with his watercolor, "From Above". The first place winners are: Lacy Franko, Independence, with her painting, "Serenity"; Monte Toon, Cleveland, OK, with his watercolor "Plein Air A Southport"; Ann Marie Buster, Caney, with her drawing "1934 Plymouth" and Anita Wilson, Thayer with her mixed media entry "Sunlight and Shadows". Caney resident, Alice Bradford is being honored this year because she has exhibited in most of the sixty-two VVAE exhibits. Alice is a self-taught artist and is showing four of her works this year. She's not sure how many times she has placed, but she won Best of Show in 2000. She has exhibited extensively in Oklahoma and Kansas.

JUROR - Steven R. Greenwall

Steven Greenwall earned his BA with a major in Art Education from Brigham Young University. He taught art in public shcools for 10 years in Utah and Wyoming. He earned his Master of Fine arts degree with an emphasis in drawing and painting from Utah State University. He currently lives in Iola, Kansas where he recently retired from teaching art at Allen County Community in Iola, Kansas.

Some of Mr Greenwall's awards include: Second Place in the Kansas Pastel Society's 4th International Pastel Exhibit; ACAAK Kansas Artists Postcard Series XIII, and XIV. He also won Best of Show and 1st place in the 2014 VVAE.

The VVAE is also featuring a silent auction. An archival print titled "Indonesian Rain Forest" was donated by former Elk City resident, Sandra Wimbish. The auction will continue until July 24th.


Show committee will accept only hand-delivered work. Artwork must be delivered to the Independence Historical Museum and must have the artist's name, title of work, and phone number printed at the top (in the center) on the back of the work. Download the entry form here.


Two-dimensional work accepted only in the following divisions:

  1. Oil and acrylic painting.
  2. Drawing (pencil, pastel, charcoal)
  3. Watercolor
  4. Mixed media

First and Second Place awards may or may not be given in each category. Awards to be determined by the Judge. A People's Choice award will also be given.
