Tour of Doug and Sylvia Rutledge Home

Eight Independence Historical Museum and Art Center group members joined several members of the Bartlesville Art Association in a field trip to Doug and Sylvia Rutledge’s home and art gallery in Coffeyville, Kansas, on Monday, September 24. Doug Rutledge, once owner of a gallery in Arizona, and his wife, Sylvia, have been collecting fine art from exhibits, auctions, garage sales, and even the world’s largest flea sale in Texas for years.

With diligence and an eye for quality art, they have a remarkable collection that includes contemporary artists as well as some not living. Cork art, Egyptian paintings on papyrus, works from a broken portfolio of Remington to ones by Paul Calle, T.C. Cannon, Bob Adam, Monte Toon, and many more grace the walls of the Rutledge home which was once a funeral home in Coffeyville. One of their favorite artists is a young lady who was present at the event, Jessica Holeman, who does framed art, covers for journals, portraits painted from old photos from museums, as well as assemblages centered on a theme.

Sylvia Rutledge is also a fine artist in her own right and has a number of beautiful pieces framed and hanging, in addition to ones in progress in her art studio which is also in their home. Their collections also include fine porcelain pieces, a bronze statue, kaleidoscopes, a framed kimono sleeve, and many southwestern selections.
